Japan eSIM guide: number, data, calls and SMS
This is a data-only Japan eSIM: 12GB, 21GB or 30GB at full KDDI 5G/4G speed with no phone number, no voice calls and no SMS. Nothing is throttled and hotspot sharing is not capped, so you can put the whole allowance through a laptop if you want — which is what separates this plan from our unlimited Japan options, where the speed is held at 10Mbps or the hotspot has its own smaller allowance.

What works where.
Full speed throughout
The allowance runs at the network's normal speed from first byte to last. There is no reduced-speed tier and no fair-use ceiling while it lasts.
Unlimited hotspot
Tethering is not capped separately. Our unlimited Japan plans cap hotspot use at a few GB; here the whole 12GB, 21GB or 30GB can go through a shared connection.
No number, calls or SMS
This is a data-only eSIM. It issues no phone number and carries no cellular voice or SMS service in either direction.
Total data, not daily data
The allowance you pick covers the whole validity period and does not reset each day. When it is used, data service stops.
SMS and verification codes
Can you receive texts on this eSIM?
Not included. This is a data-only eSIM with no SMS service in either direction, so it cannot receive one-time passcodes.
Bank and app verification codes are not guaranteed on any travel eSIM — carriers do not promise short-code delivery. Keep your home SIM available for codes.

Starts on first network connection
The plan begins when the eSIM first connects to the network, not when you buy it. Install before you travel and enable it after you land.
No number, calls or SMS
This plan cannot receive one-time passcodes by SMS and cannot place or take ordinary phone calls.
Data stops at the allowance
There is no reduced-speed continuation. When the 12GB, 21GB or 30GB is used, the data service ends.
Hotspot is uncapped, the plan is not
There is no separate limit on tethering, but everything you share still comes out of the plan's total allowance.
Install within 180 days
The eSIM must be installed within 180 days of purchase.

Confirm eSIM support and carrier-unlocked status before purchase.
Install on the final device
The QR code is for a single installation. It cannot be reinstalled or moved to another device.

Enable Data Roaming if required. If automatic setup fails, set the APN to uad5gn.au-net.ne.jp with username au@uad5gn.au-net.ne.jp, password au and CHAP authentication.
